Why I love Merriscourt

Merriscourt is, without question, one of my favourite Cotswolds wedding venues.

Set in the Oxfordshire countryside, it's a space that feels calm, considered and easy to make it your own.

Merriscourt Wedding Venue, Oxfordshire

Where the magic happens

Merriscourt is, without question, one of my favourite Cotswolds wedding venues.

I knew it long before it became a wedding venue. I used to ride my horse through the fields that run past it, and every time, without fail, it caught my attention. There’s something about the place that stays with you—quietly, without needing to do too much.

Even now, it still feels the same.

The approach

The drive in, is the where the magic starts.

A long, tree-lined avenue that gives you just enough space to step away from everything else. Time to settle, to arrive, and to start to picture how the day will unfold.

It always feels calm. Unrushed.

The setting

Set in the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside, Merriscourt feels very much part of the landscape around it. The gardens are established and natural, with soft planting and uninterrupted views across the Cotswolds.

It isn’t a venue that needs overthinking or over-styling. It already has a sense of balance to it.

For me, as a Cotswolds wedding photographer, that makes a huge difference. There’s variety without complication—open space, quieter corners, and light that works consistently throughout the day, but looks different depending on the time of year and weather on the day...that's what so exciting.

There’s always somewhere that feels right without having to go looking for it.

Inside the barn

What sets Merriscourt apart is how well the inside space works alongside the grounds.

The barns (although these rooms are way more than 'barns'!)  are bright and considered, with high ceilings and plenty of natural light—something that’s often overlooked in other barn wedding venues in the Cotswolds.  There is an abundance of carefully placed mirrors and light fixings.

It means the space never feels heavy, whatever the weather is doing outside.

There’s also a flexibility to it. The spaces can hold something grand, detailed and styled, or something much more minimal. Whatever approach you choose, they all work seamlessly.

Through the seasons

I’ve photographed weddings at Merriscourt in sun, rain, wind—and everything in between.

It doesn’t rely on perfect weather.  Merriscourt shifts with the season and still holds its own, bringing new opportunities and locations to explore.

Summer brings softer light and longer evenings.

Autumn adds texture and depth.

Winter feels quieter, muted, but no less considered.

The opportunities don’t disappear—they just change. And that tends to lead to something more natural in the photographs.

Why merriscourt works

I’ve never come away from a wedding at Merriscourt without a smile on my face.

It’s not just how it looks—it’s how it feels to be there. People settle quickly. Nothing feels forced or overly structured.  Merriscourt is friendly.

The food is incredible.

Merriscourt is not commercial but family owned.  This care and consideration both in terms of running your day and how the venue has been created, and curated is clear to see.

..And this always shows in the photographs.

Magical, beautiful, stunning and with gardens that make me green with envy!

For couples planning a Merriscourt wedding, or looking for a wedding photographer in Oxfordshire or the Cotswolds, it’s a venue I’m always glad to return to.
